Maintenance

This is a key ingredient to keeping your coat looking fab!

Our coats can last a lifetime if you treat them well, if your coat gets wet make sure you hang it to dry, if it’s left folded wet it can build mould.

We recommend you maintain your wax layer, we have found a great Aussie supplier to help keep your Charlie Parker coat looking fantastic.

The B.K. Smith Australian Reproofer is ideal for extending the water repellent properties of our coats. It comes in an easy to use spray applicator that protects against mould and mildew and is also insect repellent.

Need help cleaning and re-proofing?

Please note, the garment will require reproofing if it is washed using soap or detergent, as this will remove the layer, which makes the coat weatherproof.

We have put together some tips:

As a specialised garment, this fabric needs special attention to maintain its weatherproofing qualities. We recommend applying your reproofer at the beginning of each winter season or when you notice your coat is not repelling the rain as well as it used to.

To start the reproofing process:

  1. We recommend that any dirt is removed by brushing it off or sponge down with cold water only. If the garment does require a complete clean, we recommend using specialised Wool/Oilskin detergent or pure soap. We would not recommend putting the coat in your washing machine, just a lukewarm hand wash. You must leave the coat out to air dry whenever it becomes wet; if you leave the coat damp, it may produce mould.

  2. Start with your dry coat applying the wax.

    1. Wax spray (Read the instructions on the bottle) - Spray across the whole coat creating one even layer.

    2. Tinned wax (Read the instructions on the tin, it will need warming) - Use a cotton cloth to rub the warm wax across your coat ensuring all seams are also given attention.

  3. If it’s a sunny day hang your coat outside to dry, the sun will help the wax soak in evenly, if it’s not sunny simply hang to dry.

  4. Repeat step 3 if this is a full reproof (you have put the coat in the washer and removed all wax)

  5. To get a factory finish when your coat is dry use a hairdryer to smooth out any remaining wax left on the surface, using your cotton cloth to smooth out.

  6. Allow drying again.
